Waumba Land Class Leaders
Welcome, Class Leaders & Friends Who Step In!
You play one of the most important roles in Waumba Land — helping kids feel safe, loved, and known while learning about Jesus. This page is designed to equip you with everything you need to lead your classroom with confidence and clarity.
As a Class Leader, you’re not just managing a room — you’re setting the tone for connection, fun, and faith. Below you’ll find key responsibilities, quick videos on important procedures, and helpful reminders for leading well.
What is a Class Leader?
A Class Leader is a small group leader with a few additional leadership responsibilities. You help guide the flow of the hour, connect with families, and lead your team of small group leaders in creating a fun and faith-filled experience for preschoolers.
Key Responsibilities
Relationships
Connect with leaders in your room and create a warm, family-like environment. Celebrate birthdays, pray for one another, and share important updates with coaches. The coach pastors the Class Leaders, and Class Leaders pastor the Small Group Leaders.
Check-In/Check-Out
Greet parents warmly and be the friendly “face” of Waumba.
Ensure safety and accuracy during check-in and pick-up | Check Parent Tag.
Managing the Flow of the Hour
Follow the classroom schedule closely.
Oversee transitions between centers, story time, and group activities.
Leading and Delegating
Encourage your small group leaders.
Delegate specific tasks (running centers, clean-up, helping with bathroom breaks, etc.).
Managing Behavior
Be present and attentive.
Redirect behavior with kindness and consistency.
Ask your coach or Waumba staff for help when needed.
Investing in Families
Greet every parent and child with intention.
Follow up occasionally with postcards or notes.
Safety & Procedures
Don’t worry—these videos are short, about 20 seconds each!
Training Videos | the “how-to” and “what-to-do”
Check the parent tag before releasing a child. No child should be released without a tag, even if it’s the child of a volunteer. If someone doesn’t have their tag, find a staff member so we can help. It’s an important part of keeping our kids safe. Thanks for helping us stay consistent and secure!
What to Wear | Please wear your Waumba Land shirt when serving, along with clothing that’s comfortable and appropriate for being on the floor with kids.
Phones | Please keep your phone in your pocket or purse while serving. Do not take pictures or videos of children, as we ask volunteers not to photograph or post images.
Baby Gates | Baby gates help keep children safe in the classroom. Please keep them closed at all times, except when entering or exiting. Do not climb over the gates—we want to keep you safe too.
Wellness Policy | If a child is sick, they should stay home. If a child gets sick during class, notify your coach—they will remove the child and contact the parents.
Two Volunteers- Always | Before accepting a classroom and throughout the hour, always have at least 2 unrelated adult volunteers in the room.
Ratios | Volunteer-to-child ratios are in place to keep the classroom safe, manageable, and personal. Your coach will help manage these numbers and room capacities. If a room needs to close, your coach will help redirect kids to an appropriate classroom.
Bathroom | Volunteers should not go into the bathroom with a child. If a child needs help, have another volunteer stand at the door with a foot in the doorway so you are never alone with the child.
Changing Diapers | A sign is posted with our policy: only adult females may change diapers in Waumba Land, to help families feel comfortable.
Appropriate Play | Keep children safe: don’t swing, roughhouse, or lift by hands/arms. Redirect and praise good behavior instead of disciplining. Encourage kids to sit next to you, not on your lap. These rules help volunteers, children, and parents feel safe and comfortable.
Incidents | If a child gets hurt, notify a coach or class leader immediately. We will assist the child and contact the parents if needed. An incident report will be completed, and parents will be contacted the next day.
